It is with great sadness that we notify you of the passing of Prof. Irina Masalova on 2 August 2020.

For over three decades, Prof. Irina Masalova has been integral to the study of rheology in South Africa.  She pioneered rheology and expanded it from her time at the Pretoria Technikon (now Tshwane University of Technology) to Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).

After setting up the first centre of rheology at CPUT, Prof Masalova was one of the founders of Southern African Society of Rheology (SASOR), established in September 2006.

Prof Irina Masalova served as the Head of the Flow Process and Rheology Centre at CPUT from 2009 to 2017.

Prof. Masalova helped many companies and students understand rheology and its practical application in industry. Her contribution to the rheology world remains impactful and her legacy will be the foundation for future rheologists to build on.

She was an excellent scientist, a woman of strength, a wife and a mother, respected and loved by all who knew her.

May her soul rest in peace.
